Technology and trends
Bearing Strength.
Because the bearings are subjected to very high radial and axial loads, strength is critical. Stress-strain analysis is generally performed by CAE, plus a certain safety margin.
Bearing stiffness.
If the bearing stiffness is very poor, it will lead to a large deformation of the flange surface where the bearing is connected to the brake disc when the bearing is subjected to lateral force, which will lead to problems such as friction pad bias grinding.
Bearing dragging moment.
The dragging moment of the bearing is the resistance when the bearing rotates, its size affects the fuel consumption, and for new energy vehicles affects the range.
Bearing life.
Bearings are maintenance-free throughout the life of the vehicle, so their life must be longer than the life of the vehicle. There is a very complex formula for calculating their life, and this is where the Know-How of different component suppliers lies.
Sealing.
It refers to the seal to prevent external water/dust from entering inside the bearing, which will affect the lubricating effect of the balls, and eventually will affect the life of the balls.

To determine if a vehicle's bearings are damaged, there are two ways.

Place the vehicle on a lift and rotate the wheels hard to see if the wheels will jam and assess if the drag torque of the wheels is normal. If the balls are poorly lubricated or out of round, this can cause stalling or an increase in drag torque.

Pay attention to the wheel direction during normal vehicle driving to see if there is any noise. If the ball is poorly lubricated, the first problem that occurs is a strange noise. If there is no noise, there is usually no problem.

In addition, since the majority of wheel speed sensors have their signal source (pole or ring) integrated into the bearing, if there is a problem with the wheel speed signal, the instrument panel will report a fault code and the ABS fault light will be on as shown in the figure below.
So if the ABS fault light is on, there is a possibility that the magnetic pole of the bearing is damaged.
